Exam Structure
- •Licensing body: Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors (O.C.G.A. Title 43, Chapter 41; Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. Department 553), with a Residential Contractor Division and a General Contractor Division.
- •Exam vendor: PSI. Outline source: PSI Candidate Information Bulletin 971 (updated 4/28/2025); the NASCLA commercial exam is also published in PSI Bulletin 1458 (updated 7/7/2026).
- •Every licence needs two passes: the Business & Law exam plus one trade exam.
- •Business & Law: 50 scored questions, 120 minutes, 70% to pass (35 correct), open book. One pass satisfies the Business & Law requirement for every other Residential and General Contractor licence.
- •Residential-Basic trade exam: 80 questions, 200 minutes, 70% to pass (56 correct), open book.
- •Residential-Light Commercial trade exam: 90 questions, 230 minutes, 70% to pass (63 correct), open book.
- •General Contractor and General Contractor Limited Tier: NASCLA-Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors, 115 questions, 330 minutes, 70% to pass (81 correct), open book.
- •PSI may add 1 to 10 unscored experimental items; they count against exam time.
- •Code questions are graded only against the code edition listed in the bulletin. Non-code references may be used in later editions.

Pass Rates
- •No pass-rate figure appears in PSI Bulletin 971, PSI Bulletin 1458 or the board's published materials.
- •The passing standard is fixed at 70% of scored questions on every Georgia contractor exam.

- •Open book: candidates bring their own references; PSI does not supply them at the test centre.
- •Books may be highlighted, underlined and indexed with permanent tabs only. No handwritten notes, no Post-it or temporary tabs, no loose or attached papers.
- •A silent, nonprinting, non-programmable calculator is allowed.
- •Business & Law: the only reference is the NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management, Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors, 3rd Edition (ISBN 978-1-934234-84-6); only the 3rd Edition has been allowed since September 1, 2021.

Registration And Cost
- •Apply to the board first. After approval the candidate receives an Exam Approval Letter and registers with PSI.
- •Eligibility lasts 1 year from the approval letter; both Business & Law and the trade exam must be passed within that year, and only a failed exam is retaken.
- •PSI exam fees, charged per registration including repeats: residential trade exams $72; NASCLA GC and GC Limited Tier exams $106; Business & Law $60.
- •After failing either exam twice, wait at least 1 year after the last exam before a third attempt (O.C.G.A. 43-41-6(g)).
Licensure Path In Georgia
- •Classes: Residential-Basic, Residential-Light Commercial, General Contractor and General Contractor Limited Tier, each held as an individual or as a qualifying agent for a business.
- •Residential-Basic: at least 21 years old; 2 years of experience as or for a residential contractor, mostly residential-basic work; significant responsibility for 2 residential-basic projects in the 2 years before applying (Rule 553-3-.01).
- •Residential-Light Commercial: a relevant bachelor's degree plus 1 year, or college credit plus experience totalling 4 years, or 4 years of construction experience with at least 2 as or for a residential contractor; plus 2 light-commercial projects in the 4 years before applying (Rule 553-3-.02).
- •General Contractor and Limited Tier: a relevant bachelor's degree plus 1 year, or college credit plus experience totalling 4 years, or 4 years in construction with at least 2 as or for a general contractor and 1 in administration, estimating, supervision or project management (Rules 553-4-.01, 553-4-.05).
- •Net worth: $25,000 for Residential-Basic, Residential-Light Commercial and Limited Tier; $150,000 for General Contractor. Limited Tier contracts are capped at $1,000,000 each.
- •General liability insurance: $300,000 for Residential-Basic; $500,000 for Residential-Light Commercial, General Contractor and Limited Tier. Workers' compensation as Georgia law requires (3 or more employees, O.C.G.A. 34-9-2).
- •A residential licence is required when the value of the work or the compensation, whichever is higher, exceeds $2,500 (O.C.G.A. 43-41-2).
- •Renewal every two years, due June 30 of even-numbered years; a late penalty runs to December 31, after which the licence counts as revoked.
- •Continuing education: Residential-Basic 3 hours per year; Residential-Light Commercial 6 hours per year (Rule 553-12-.02).
- •Reciprocity: Residential-Basic with Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina; General Contractor with Louisiana and Mississippi (the 06/22 comparison chart also lists North Carolina and Tennessee). Reciprocity applicants must still pass the Georgia Business & Law exam.
- •NASCLA lists the Georgia board among the agencies that accept the NASCLA commercial exam.
